Third Green Flag

Yes we have done it again. Platt has managed to achieve its third ECO Green School flag. If you are unsure what it means to be an ECO school then please look at our ECO page on this website to find out more. A big thank you to our ECO class representatives who spent the afternoon with the ECO School assessor showing off all the things we do to save energy, recycle, care for our environment and wildlife and keep litter to a minimum. The children learn through the curriculum about global issues and by holding special events, such as Green Day, the whole school can be involved in discovering why it is important to care for our planet.

Switch Off and Say Goodbye to Stand-by

This last month we have been trying to conserve our use of electricity through following a campaign called Switch off Fortnight.  During the two weeks everyone is encouraged to turn off the stand-by button, or switch off lights and other electrical items when not in use. We hope this will become a habit. Why not try it at home?

Here are some thoughts to consider on owning and driving a car whilst helping the planet:

  • Slow down – you’ll save money!
  • Plan your journey and try to travel at quieter times of the day – less congestion means less time stood still with the engine running.
  • Look at the maintenance of your car, especially your tyre pressures, under-inflated tyres can lose you 3 – 4 miles per gallon!
  • Empty your car of unnecessary items, less weight = less effort = less fuel used.
  • Choose a car with low emissions – overall it may be a more economical car.
  • Think about keeping your car longer – this means that there is less environmental damage from manufacturers making new vehicles.

If you have any ECO suggestions then please let us know.
