Welcome to Platt School Nursery
Parents and carers are confident about the quality of care and support their children receive.
Ofsted 2010
OUR AIMS
• To provide a safe, caring, fun and effective environment to promote and extend the skills, attitudes, and understanding of each individual child as a sound basis for later education.
• To provide activities that stimulate and build upon children’s curiosity; to enable them to learn through planned worthwhile play activities, explore their environment, be imaginative and creative and give them time to plan, and reflect upon their experiences
• To ensure that a wide range of materials and equipment are used in planned and progressive ways that will enable the children to make maximum progress towards the early learning goals.
• We believe that learning in the early years is the foundation on which children build the rest of their lives.
Background
The Nursery has grown hugely since Platt School Governors first opened it in 1990, using a spare school classroom a few mornings each week. It now uses a mobile classroom installed in part of the school playground. The Nursery is popular, has supportive parents and a good reputation within the local community.
Staffing
A Nursery Supervisor is in charge of the nursery, supported by 2 Deputy Supervisors and several Nursery Assistants, plus midday supervisors to look after children at lunchtime.
Curriculum
As well as a wide range of carefully-planned, fun activities for the children taking account of their varied ages and stages of development, the staff provide two sessions of music and two of P.E a week in the school hall . There is an outdoor play area with a playhouse, climbing and balancing equipment and a space for riding tricycles and scooters.
Sessions
The Nursery provides morning and afternoon sessions during term time. Up to eighteen children attend each half-day session. Some may stay all day, bringing their own packed lunch. Most children are aged 3- 4 years old, though the Nursery is registered to accept two-year-olds. Our Nursery is able to provide free Early Years entitlement of 3 hours per session for up to 5 sessions per week. Our sessions run for 3¼ hours. Those parents choosing to take up the whole session will be charged for the last 15 minutes after the first free 3 hours at the rate of £3.94 per hour for the current academic year (2010-2011).
School and Nursery Links
There are strong links between the Nursery and the school. In terms 5 and 6 older nursery children may visit the Reception class, e.g. for stories. They may also attend the school’s weekly celebration assembly. The great majority of children transfer to the school’s Reception class in September each year, though being at the Nursery does not guarantee a place in the school (see school admissions policy for details). The Nursery Supervisor and the Reception teacher in the school liaise frequently to ensure that those pupils transferring to the school are well prepared for the move.
Further links with the school are through the Management Committee, which comprises the Head teacher of the school, the Nursery Supervisor, the school’s Early Years Co-ordinator, two school governors and an elected representative of the parents of children in the Nursery.
The Nursery had a very successful Ofsted inspection in May 2010 (see the Ofsted website www.ofsted.gov.uk/reports/ using URN 127453).
Children’s learning and development are promoted well in a conducive and caring environment. All children are included fully in the range of activities and use of equipment. One parent commented, ‘This is a really good nursery, my child’s confidence levels have increased’
